Centenerian businesses in Barcelona
Last week I had the opportunity to share lunch with Mr. Albert Bramona, Mr. Manel Casals and Eduard Bosch from the official Hotel Association in Barcelona. Going back to the office we passed by one of the oldest businesses in the city, "El Rey de La Magia", and Mr. Bramona explained to me some old stories around this place which I found highly interesting! He told me that when he was a kid, everyone from Barcelona would come to this store to buy toys and other items for young children. Since its openning it became one of the most known stores in Barcelona. As of today "El Rey de La Magia" is still open! If you go in you feel like you went back to the beginning of the 20th century! Well, if you walk around the old city, you will see right in front of the oldest and most traditional stores a big plate on the ground to commemorate it is a centenarian business! They were given by the city hall to all business and stores who have maintained its business activity for the last 100 years!!! Mi objective in this travel blog is to look for all these centenarian businesses in the city and share their stories with you! Don´t you think it is a great way to get to know the city and its history!??? Contratulations to all families who have managed to keep all these businesses up and running!!!

Since I was 5 years old, I have been visiting this historical place for Christmas. My parents used to take me there to have some chocolate with some pastry.
When you go there ask for "Chocolate con melindros" you will not regret it! ;)

Very close from Plaza Catalunya you find this centenarian drugstore. If you take a look to its façade you can get an idea on how businesses looked in the old times!
I recommend you to go inside and take at deep look! :)

I have to admit I am not very much into museums and galleries, but I could not miss visiting this gallery after I found out that this place has been there for the last 100 years! :)

It is amazing how some businesses have been able to continue running during so many years. We are used to see businesses open and close so often that when I see a place like this one, I get very impressed!
It is located in the center of the city, surrounded by very modern stores, so when you see it you stop and look at it with admiration!

If you want to see how a store would look like a hundred years ago, just spend some time visiting this beautiful store! When you go in you can tell how it was when it was first opened!
They haven´t changed much its decoration! Its façade is what I like the most from this store! don´t go crazy looking for it, but if you find it, just go in and take a look!

Today we decided to eat at this beautiful and very well known restaurant. I am from Barcelona but I had never been before! I heard lots of things about it and it has taken me 38 years to visit it :)
From Monday to Saturday they serve a very unexpensive menu. Today we ate for 17 euros each, which is not bad considering it is a high quality restaurant!
We talked to the waiter and asked for some background and we discovered very interesting things about this place. 4Gats was inaugurated on June 12, 1897. The restaurant was opened by Pere Romeu, a waiter at the cabaret "Le Chat Noir".
In 1899, Picasso, aged 17, began to hang out there and has his first exhibition in the restaurant. The restaurant also became a popular meeting place for musicians such as Isaac Albéniz and his friends Enric Granados and Lluis Millet, or architects and designers including Gaudà and Ricard Opisso.
And today you find great personalities eating here, such as Adrià Julià (designer) and Tirso Maldonado (that´s me) heheheh ;) just kidding, but it has been great to visit this centenarian restaurant!
